Short description/annotation:
The 5ᵗʰ/11ᵗʰ-century folios of Sībawayh’s Kitāb that we are editing here contain three distinct Western recensions of the text. These folios offer valuable insights into the transmission of the Kitāb and the evolution, survival, and disappearance of its recensions.
Description:
The 5ᵗʰ/11ᵗʰ-century folios of Sībawayh’s Kitāb that we are editing here are particularly notable for containing three distinct Western (Andalusian or North African) recensions of the famous grammatical text. The first recension, by a certain ʾAbū al-Ḥasan ʾAḥmad bin Naṣr, was subsequently emended by a second scribe to align it with the recension of ʾAbū Ǧaʿfar al-Naḥḥās (d. 338/949), and later by a third scribe who aligned it with the recension of ʾAbū ʿAbd Allāh al-Rabāḥī (d. 358/969).
To this day, the first recension has remained unknown to the grammatical tradition. The second recension, though known to scholars, is being published here for the first time, while the third recension is found in numerous manuscripts across the world.
Table of contents:
Introduction 1 From Sībawayh’s Kitāb to Kitāb Sībawayh 2 The Milan-Kazan codex, a witness of the death of two recensions 3 The editions of Sībawayh’s Kitāb 4 An incomplete codex split between four collections 5 Codicology of the four groups together 6 Palaeography 7 One codex, three recensions 8 Who is ʾAbū al-Ḥasan ʾAḥmad ibn Naṣr? 9 Edition principles Key to the edition Abbreviations Appendix Bibliography Index Edition
Biographical note:
Jean N. Druel, Ph.D. (2012), Radboud University, Nijmegen, is a researcher at the Dominican Institute in Cairo. He has authored articles on the history of the Arab grammatical tradition and the Milan-Kazan codex of Sībawayh’s Kitāb.
