After four decades abroad, the author returns to Lebanon and encounters a country in crisis—yet still defined by its humanity, contradictions, and enduring rhythms. From his balcony, he connects everyday scenes to Lebanon’s descent from fragility into profound collapse. He examines the forces behind this unraveling: repeated wars, failed reconstruction, sectarian power-sharing, entrenched militias, weakened institutions, and an economic model built on debt, banking excess, and central-bank financial engineering. After 2019, this state-sanctioned, Ponzi-like system imploded, devastating infrastructure, public services, savings, and the middle class while revealing corruption and impunity as systemic features of governance. The book explores Lebanon’s fractured social worlds, including alienated youth, marginalized women, refugees, migrant workers, and a diaspora betrayed by the banking collapse. It also considers collective amnesia, unresolved war trauma, the vitality of art and culture, and the influence of regional powers, Western governments, and international institutions. In its final chapters, the author imagines a different future grounded in citizenship beyond sectarianism, independent courts, decentralization, a state monopoly on force, and a productive economy. Amid personal doubts, he finds hope in everyday decency, resistance, and the refusal to accept Lebanon’s present order as inevitable.
