        On Photography in Lebanon

        On Photography in Lebanon
        Stories and Essays

by Edited by Clémence Cottard Hachem and Nour Salamé

With 40 contributors, including: Walid Sadek, Yasmine Chemali, Jacques Aswad, Fouad ElKoury, Christine Khouri, Gregory Buchakjian, François Cheval, Oliver Rohe, Bernard Khoury, Vartan Avakian, Ghada Waked, Lévon Nordikian,… The approach of this publication is both alternative and transversal. With the collection of possible essays, it proposes - in order to better question it - a wide arborescence on the evolution of photographic attitudes in Lebanon since the arrival of its first photographic explorers until its recent artistic usages and practices. On Photography in Lebanon is a book in which forty contributors share their perspectives on photography in Lebanon, evoking its equally numerous forms of existence. Examining techniques, practices, uses, objects, images, histories, and artistic approaches, this publication presents 380 photographs produced between the end of the 19th century and the present day.

        Passing Time

        Passing Time

Passing Time looks back at 60 years (from 1960 – 2017) of photographs taken in Lebanon by artist Fouad Elkoury.
It took eight-month of research for the curators, Manal Khader and Gregory Buchakjian, to excavate the 160 photographs of this book - most of which have never been published before -, from the 50 000 images, meticulously numbered and labeled, of the artist’s archive. The publication is suffused with emotion, and was realized in close collaboration with the artist.

        Fragments

        Fragments

“Growing up, I ate lunch with my maternal grandparents every other Sunday. They lived in a large, cold apartment and showed their affection in a restrained manner; so I spent most of my time sitting in a chair trying to behave”. This first sentence from Rayyane Tabet’s performance Dear Victoria marks the start of an artistic project and quest, based on a family story. A spy story?
The book Fragments was designed by the artist as an installation, coupled with a performance, and is inspired by a family legend about Rayyane Tabet’s great-grand-father. The book accompanies an exhibition which travelled from the Kunstverein in Hamburg to Beirut.

        Against Photography

        Against Photography

Photographic objects have been the centre of Akram Zaatari’s artistic practice since 1995. Photographic formations or emergences, as he calls them, are the focus of this publication: enigmatic objects that bear traces of past events and accompany people through key moments in their lives. Cherished at times, destroyed at others, photographs are capable of provoking diverse and extreme reactions. Initially, capturing instances, they change over time. The perception of an image changes, but sometimes the physicality of the object itself is also altered as a result of its contact with the natural, social and political environment. The desire to own these images, to look for them and collect them, is rooted in a spectrum of motivations from the personal to the commercial.
In 1997, Zaatari co-founded the Arab Image Foundation (AIF) partly to contain this activity of collecting, but also to organise it within an institutional framework and give it form through an expanding collection, which itself is a result of multiple modes of acquisition. Less of a repository of documents, the strength and originality of the AIF lies in the critical intersection of two archival practices, institutional and artistic. Over the past 20 years, the AIF was the medium through which many of Zaatari’s projects and interests were developed.
        Co-edition with MACBA.
This book has been awarded the Laus Bronze Award.
