12 ANGRY LEBANESE is an artistic project presented by the inmates of Roumieh prison
From the bowels of Lebanon’s most notorious prison, Roumieh prison, Daccache’s adaptation of Reginald Rose’s “12 Angry Men” play emerges in what is “perhaps its grittiest and most striking adaptation” (The National Abu-Dhabi ). Forty inmates take part in the production of the play “12 Angry Lebanese”, which marks the pioneer use of drama therapy/theatre in a prison in the Arab World. Rose’s drama revolves around a 12-man jury that must decide the fate of a 19-year old man accused of murdering his father. The boy if convicted, will be put to death. The jury’s verdict must be unanimous and, at the beginning, 11 jurors agree that the boy is guilty and that the case is cut and dried… leaving one dissenter. Persistently and persuasively he forces the other men to slowly reconsider and review the shaky case against the endangered defendant. Twelve Angry Lebanese is a rugged theatrical collage oscillating between the American courtroom drama and inmates’ personal monologues, sketch comedy in drag, live original music written and composed and performed by the inmates and even a hip-hop dance break demonstrating the mundane aspects of prison life. The cast features a hodgepodge of nationalities and races, and includes inmates serving time for drug dealing, murder, rape and some put on death row. Filmed inside Roumieh Prison in February 2009, at one of the live performances given to the external audience, “Twelve Angry Lebanese”, the play, stands as a remarkable achievement and confirms that theatre grounded in circumstance has limitless potential.
