The Story Behind Crush it!

Everything has changed. The social media revolution has irreversibly changed the way we live our lives and conduct our business. There are billions of dollars in advertising moving online, waiting to be claimed by whoever can build the best content and communities. Despite this change, most people keep working at jobs that don’t make them happy and businesses continue to ignore the major marketing and public relations benefits that can be found online.

Myth #1: I’m not passionate about something sexy or popular like wine so these lessons don’t apply to me.

The internet has drastically decreased the costs of building communities around niche subjects, allowing for even the most obscure subjects to draw enough eyeballs to command advertising attention. Starting a video blog about tortilla chips may seem farfetched until Doritos gives you a call and offers 40,000 a year to sponsor and advertise on your blog.

Myth #2: My business already has a Twitter account and a Facebook page, we’re set in the social media department.

This is the equivalent of claiming twenty years ago that just because your business bought a TV spot and a few ads in the newspaper, you didn’t need to pay attention to your advertising department. Social media isn’t about joining in, it’s about being involved.

Myth #3: I’m happy at my job so this book is irrelevant to me.

First of all, congratulations on finding work that makes you happy! However, the lessons in this book are valuable to anyone, regardless of their employment status. Crush It will show you how to utilize high level and platform specific social media and marketing strategies that will improve your work. It will also show you how to build a personal brand so that even if you’re forced to leave your job, a situation that’s especially relevant today, you’ll be able to easily find employment elsewhere in a field you’re passionate about.

Myth #4: I need to quit my job to take advantage of this book’s entrepreneurial lessons.

While the entrepreneurial strategies in this book do take time, it’s completely reasonable to start the effort as an after-work project to build up until you’re able to replace your current income with the income from your online presence. While you may have to fall behind on the current season of Lost or let your Madden 2010 game suffer, because you’ll be doing something you love you won’t mind putting in the extra effort.

In Crush It, Gary Vaynerchuk shows how anyone can build a career around what they’re passionate about. He also delivers both high-level and platform specific strategy and analysis, allowing you to take advantage of the current business environment while preparing you to succeed as it changes and evolves.

This book isn’t interested in making unrealistic promises while glossing over the work involved. Making a living by building content around your passion isn’t simple and it doesn’t happen overnight. What it is, however, is fulfilling and in most cases just as profitable, if not more so, than your previous job.

Furthermore, a business can’t just pay lip service to social media and expect it to return results. The transparency and accountability inherent in its structure necessitates a comprehensive and dedicated strategy in order to reap its tremendous benefits.

By combining practical analysis and strategy with the same passion and humor that’s made Gary one of the most in demand keynote speakers in the U.S. as well as network television’s go to wine expert, Crush It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand and harness the future of business and work.

  • How Savvy Are You?
    From Amazon

After having this book recommended to me time and again (and being wowed by Gary's energy in speeches), I decided to see what the hype's all about. I think this is a good book in general, just not so great for me. Before going into the subject matter, I have to say I was disappointed by the book's size. Though it's a hardback, it's a very small one - closer in size to a trade paperback. It's a quick read at less than 150 pages long, with large-ish type (including one page that only has one word on it). After all the hype touting this as a magnum opus, I was definitely expecting more weight. Crush It! has a lot to say about the power of social media, and leveraging that power to build Internet businesses (based on your personal passions) capable of making you round-the-clock money. Sounds great, right? It is! If you're willing to work incredibly hard, and be human while you're doing it, you can go far. Even if the thing you love most in life is swimming pool pH levels or knitting tail cozies for your dog, you can make a living at it. If you're already running a blog and/or using other forms of social media on a regular basis, this may not be the book for you. This book provides a great introduction to how Twitter, Facebook and YouTube (among others) can be used to project your personality and passion into multiple formats, but you should know how to do these things if you use those platforms already. You won't get any "social networking secrets," just common sense advice on how to be your passionate self. If you aren't quite sure where to start, Crush It! provides an easy-to-follow roadmap that I can pretty much guarantee will show you spectacular results if you follow it closely. The suggestions are smart, just geared to slightly behind me on the learning curve. Even if your experience in blogging and social media is beyond the entry-level instructions in Crush It!, there are still some valuable portions of this book for you. First and foremost, Gary's trademark passion still translates in print. Reading the story of how he came to the United States, his family's work ethic, and his early ventures into entrepreneurship show that he's truly doing what he was born to do. I also found the book inspirational, as it gave me lots of ideas about how to streamline several things I already had going on. Despite its drawbacks, I'd still recommend this as something to read. If you're already on the road to probloggerdom, it may be less valuable for you - but you're still bound to find something useful in Crush It!

  • Good book for Vaynerchuk fans, but nothing really new
    From Amazon

I got a copy via Wishlist Products promotion and it's a good, down-to-earth and fast read. Gary is a enthusiastic and practical guy who gets to the nitty gritty FAST. Vaynerchuk fans will appreciate that. I found the writing style (written with a ghostwriter) to more like a one-sided conversation -- it sounds like book was dictated and transcribed. He has an interesting story, but this book doesn't have any new, eye-opening concepts. Considering Gary's style, the audiobook may be a better, more entertaining option as he records it himself.

  • Get Your Thinking Going In The Right Direction
    From Amazon

Watch Video Here: Crush It is a good book to have, as it causes you to think about your market and what you could be doing. As the author of The Selling Gap, Selling Strategies for the 21st Century and the new release Bypassing 'No' in Business one knows what goes into a book. This is written for understanding and can be used by anyone doing marketing.

  • Passion is the key to growing your personal brand in a wired world!
    From Amazon

Gary's book "Crush It" is an easy read that is full of tips and tools for getting started in building your online personal brand through blogging and social media. He gives a no-nonsense overview of what it takes to be successful, and the number one ingredient is "Passion"! You must be passionate about your subject matter if you want to be successful with promoting your online brand because it enables you to stay focused and committed to the process. Gary says pick your medium, whatever you're comfortable with, and leverage the power of word-of-mouth in social media to help grow your reputation and ultimately monetize your insights and knowledge. Obviously Gary knows wine, and it happens to be a topic that allows for a great deal of subjectivity and opinion. Where an educational gap exists, there is always an opportunity to build credibility and authority around the subject. When choosing YOUR theme for building your online personal brand, choose something that you are truly passionate about, as Gary recommends, and also choose subject matter where you can really stand out and create an authoritative online presence. Thanks Gary for sharing your insights!

  • Hello Passion!
    From Amazon

Gary Vaynerchuk has hit a home run with his book Crush It! This book uses our passion, that deep resonating passion that we all have for a particular interest, and tells us how best to leverage it. Gary, of Wine Library, tells us of his humble beginnings working in his parent's store as a teenager. Even then he saw a need, people couldn't decide which wine they wanted. So, he studied up on the subject and realized he loved wine, at least understanding it in the beginning. This book shows you how to: * Recognize your passion * Leverage social media to extend or build your brand * Embrace a customer service model * Enjoy every aspect of your passion He has since become a main player in brand management and is a passionate user of social media, provided it fits in with his strategy. This book is not simply a read and never touch again book, but rather a book to reference throughout your journey of "passion" building. I listened to the book, but I will probably pick up an e-book or even the hardback version of this book for my library.
