Synopsis

Published as part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the American University of Beirut, One Hundred and Fifty is a collection of twenty-six scholarly accounts that highlight various aspects of the University’s history.

The book is organized into five general themes.
A section on the early history of the University offers different perspectives on its changing role within the region from its founding in 1866 up to World War I.
The section on “AUB, the USA, and the World” covers subjects of academic freedom, AUB’s Arab studies program and Economic Research Institute (no longer in existence), the intrusion of Cold War politics into University affairs, and the soft power wielded by the University.
Another section deals with the physical campus and its surroundings, while a fourth, entitled “Academic/Scientific Contributions,” considers the University’s activities in promoting Arabic and Islamic sciences, archaeology, and agriculture.
A final section focusses on particular individuals who have played significant roles through the University’s history, including Bulus Khauli, Jurji Zaydan, Anis Frayha, Kamal Salibi, Constantine Zurayk, Wadad Kadi, and three artists: John Carswell, Helen Khal, and Huguette Caland.

The line drawings of Dr. Jala Makhzoumi of AUB’s Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management add to the beauty of the publication.

It becomes clear while reading the book that these are but a random selection of a myriad stories about AUB, and there is no one single history of the University.
