Beyrouth by day by Tania Hadjithomas Mehanna, Photography by Ghadi Smat
Beirut... the city. Neighborhoods to be discovered and experienced, images to be taken, words to be written. Beirut... the encounters. Genuine smiles, innate kindness, spontaneaous hospitality and even the occasional worries. Beirut... the history. Millenniums in sight, interlaced with streets and alleys, above and below. Beirut... the stories. Little anecdotes that pepper daily routine and make up the city's soul and spirit. Beirut... the traditions. Those that are spoken of with great emotion. Those that have been preserved. Daylight brings out Beirut's realities, diverse and entwined.
Whether in the streets of Hamra, along highways, along the walls of the River of Beirut or in the Beirut art center vicinity graffiti and stencils have been showing up often in the past three or four years. Marking Beirut is the first ever publication to deal with the subject of Beirut Graffiti. It started off as a Final Year project for Saudi AUB student Tala Saleh and ended up being published as a subjective study of this visual layer of our city. We love this book not only because it’s the first English language account of this particular art form in Lebanon but also because it proves that Lebanese university students have it in them to tackle subjects in an interesting and engaging way.
