Reading in English is not an odd thing amongst lebanese, whether they live abroad or not. Through our studies, work, expatriation, almost all of us are reading, speaking, if not writing, in English on a daily basis. Alinea's purpose is to communicate, all over the world, the spirit which drives us to pay no attention to cultural or language barriers but grasp whatever we find interesting or enlightening. We like to know what's happening everywhere, may be because we all live somewhere else. Through a childhood friend, a cousin, a mother or a son we have ears and eyes on every continent, and we may read in English, French or Arabic, even Spanish, German or Portuguese. Breaking the language barrier: Alinea and Antoineonline.com intend to bring you the cultural diversity you may be aspiring to. Furthermore, a web site, www.alineamag.com, will soon be released and set a constant home to our English and French book reviews, awaiting a future Arabic book review in French, English and Arabic that will complete our editorial line. Last but not least, do not hesitate to forward Alinea's monthly review to your friends and colleagues who can also subscribe online to receive it automatically.

Cyril Hadji-Thomas

For the past decade Walid Raad, Akram Zaatari, and Rabih Mroue, amongst others, have been dealing through their art with such themes as history, memory, violence and the civil war. In more ways than one the Lebanese contemporary art scene identifies largely with such post-war initiatives.  Beirut Art Center’s latest exhibition, “The Road to Peace” has us looking into art pieces that were produced during the war. Harvested from private collectors or artists’ studios these pieces, ranging from drawings to sculpture, to collages to full scale Guernica style paintings, some of which were never intended for public viewing, “are a form of expiation, cleansing and apology from the hostility, brutality and cruelty of a mad environment.”

From Lebanon

Zeina Maasri tells the story of the Lebanese civil war through the political posters that flooded the streets from 1975 to 1990. With extensive knowledge of the local context and an in depth understanding of the semiotics of media art, she looks at the aesthetic influences amongst each of the political factions, sometimes referring to Latin America or revolutionary Iran. Maasri also discusses the changing iconography of the posters in relation to a changing identity as the war developed.

Fiction

You or someone like you by Chandler Burr
If you are one of those who still believe that a book can change lives, this is the one for you.
Anne Rosenbaum, the English daughter of diplomats, met her husband, Orthodox Jewish from Brooklyn turned Hollywood executive, Howard Rosenbaum, at Columbia University when they were both studying literature.
When one of her husband’s friends asks her to make a reading list for Hollywood executives she finds herself leading an exclusive book club.  Slowly coming out of her isolation she guides the members of the club through Donne, Yeats, Auden, and Mamet. After her 17 year old son comes back from a trip to Israel, her husband turns back to the Orthodoxy he had left behind. Anne must then set out to save her marriage and retrieve her husband’s love.
Both a book about books, and about their power to change our lives, this book is a must read if only for the lessons in literature.
Relentless: A Novel by Dean Koontz
It strikes us as somewhat ironic that Dean Koontz’s new thriller should be propelled by a bad book review.  Bestselling author Cullen 'Cubby' Greenwich is horrified when his otherwise successful book receives a bad review from the most feared and revered critic in town, Shearman Waxx, in one of the foremost newspapers of the country.  Successful, happily married and father to a wonderful six year old, Cubby intends to ignore the review. That is until he stumbles unto Waxx at the men’s room of a restaurant and his six year old pees on him. Waxx then promises ‘Cubby’ eternal doom and jumpstarts things by blowing up his house.
This book has an interesting plot and is sure to keep you hooked as long as you keep an open mind.

This is a great anthology of the most important words spoken by mankind.
Hugo!: The Hugo Chavez Story from Mud Hut to Perpetual Revolution by Bart Jones
Bart Jones worked as an Associated Press correspondent in Venezuela for 8 years, and was witness to Hugo Chavez’s rise to power. An outspoken socialist, revered by some as the successor to Simon Bolivar, “the liberator”, Chavez is known for his hatred of the Bush administration, providing social justice for Venezuela's poor and creating a new political model that has affected the whole of South America.
In this detailed account of this fascinating man’s life Jones paints a portrait of Chavez that is neither evil nor saintly.
A photographic insert completes this carefully researched and documented biography.
Three cups of tea by Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin
Three cups of tea is a true account of one courageous man’s daring ambition to build schools throughout Taliban ruled Pakistan and Afghanistan.
After a failed attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, Mortenson finds himself severely ill and is nursed for 7 weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe. In return he promises to build them their first school. This is the project that grew into the Central Asia Institue which has, to date, built over 55 schools in rural areas.  This co-authored book tells the story of how the institute came to be, and that of the unlikely friends and fierce enemies Greg Mortenson has made on his way.  It’s the story of how one man is fighting the war on terror, one school at a time.

    Quote of the Month

"One never knew what to expect to see on the streets. I was doing my grocery shopping one afternoon when two militia boys rushed past... One had three revolvers stuffed in his belt and the other had two bullet-belts crisscrossing his chest, and two Kalashnikovs slung over his shoulder. Both were carrying bouquets of red roses. It was Mother's Day."
