Interview

Mar Mikhail recently witnessed the opening of a new and innovative bookshop/coffee shop called Papercup. We asked Rania Naufal, its creator and manager three questions about her new project:

What is the concept behind your bookshop?

Papercup is a dedicated bookshop, focusing primarily on architecture, design, photography and art books. In addition, one can find children's books, travel guides, a selection of graphic novels, and more. The idea is to have a personal space with a friendly service, stocking books that are not necessarily (or easily) found in Lebanon. The space being small, we cannot stock everything, that is why we would like to encourage people to order anything book they like and do not find in the store even if it does not touch the realm of the aforementioned subjects. If someone passes by and wants a Danielle Steel or a cookbook, we will gladly provide it on a special order basis (this can take up from a day to 3 weeks to be delivered depending on the title and its availability). The magazine selection is wider in terms of subjects. The idea of a coffee shop within the bookshop is rather simple: who doesn't like to savour a book while drinking coffee, tea, or else?

How did you select the books?

The first book selection was a start and a rather personal (my entourage and myself) one. I am however looking forward to see it grow and evolve. Today was our first day of public activity and it is interesting to see the needs and demands of the different people who come in.

Are you planning on organizing public events with regards to books?

Regarding public events, yes we are planning on having some. We just need a bit of time and hope to have news very soon.
