        Scheherazade’s Diary - The Documentary

        Scheherazade’s Diary - The Documentary

The women inmates of Lebanon’s Baabda Prison mine the depths of personal experience and confront patriarchy as they prepare and present the first theatre performance staged inside an Arab women’s prison.
Filmed during and after the ten-month drama therapy/theatre project set up in 2012 in Baabda prison by drama therapist and director Zeina Daccache, this gripping and tragicomic documentary features the women inmates who, through their unprecedented theatre initiative entitled “Scheherazade in Baabda”, challenge societies that oppress women.
In the course of their artistic journey, these “murderers of husbands, adulterers and drug felons” reveal stories of domestic violence, traumatic childhood, failed marriage, forlorn romance and deprivation of motherhood that become the narratives of this self-revelatory film, with flamenco dance to boot. The film journeys into the quotidian of prison life, follows the women storytellers as they rehearse for the show, and intermingles scenes from the live performance with testimonials and backstage antics.
The women of Baabda Prison speak for all female inmates behind bars in Lebanon just as they convey the plight of all women imprisoned by rigid and oppressive mentalities. The Scheherazades of Baabda dare not only to reflect on their own wrongdoings and crimes but also to stand up before numerous audiences and bare their personal stories to heal their – and their community’s – wounds and express their sincere desire to change their lives. In so doing, the women inmates hold up a mirror to Lebanese society, implicating us all in oppression that often leads to crime.

        Shebaik Lebaik

        Shebaik Lebaik

Not only is this theatrical performance different from the others, it is also the first of its kind to be presented to the Lebanese and Arab audiences. The actors are Migrant Workers and Migrant Domestic Workers residing in Lebanon, which is home to roughly 200 000 or more Migrant Workers who migrate to work from across Asia and Africa, and where racist and degrading treatment of Migrant Domestic Workers often takes place. Under the controversial "kafala" (sponsorship) system that Lebanon enforces and the lack of labor protection, they are left at the mercy of their employers and are often referred to simply as "servants" or "Sri Lankans," regardless of their nationality.
From the actors’ personal stories, the play “Shebaik Lebaik” emerges as a result of 11 months of drama therapy work, highlighting their traditions, introducing their respective countries and voicing out messages from the migrant workers population to the Lebanese Society. They also express issues that the Kafil (Sponsor) faces under the Kafala system.
Filmed at AltCity in 2014-2015 during one of the live performances before a wide audience, “Shebaik Lebaik” constitutes a vehicle for the actors to ensure justice for Migrant Domestic Workers and employers, and to raise awareness among the general public. “Shebaik Lebaik” led to the cancellation of the circular number 1778 issued in October 2014, stating that Migrant Domestic Workers are not allowed to have romantic relationships on the Lebanese territory.

From the Bottom of My Brain

From the Bottom of My Brain

Not only is this theatrical performance different from the others, it is also the first of its kind to be presented to the Lebanese and Arab audiences. The actors are residents at Al Fanar Psychiatric Hospital. Many of them have been rejected and discriminated against by a society that still regards mental illness as a social taboo. A great number of them have not enjoyed the visit of family or friends for almost 30 years. However, Catharsis (the Lebanese Center for Drama Therapy) has decided, together with Al Fanar Hospital's administration, to pave the way to new conditions that will assist the residents in regaining their self-confidence and making their voices heard by the society outside.
Indeed, Catharsis has implemented weekly Drama Therapy sessions from 2010 to 2013, involving men and women residing at Al Fanar Hospital in Zahrani (South of Lebanon). The stories told by the patients about their illnesses and the challenges they faced are nothing but an expression of their sincere desire to build a bridge that reconnects them with the world. In their own words: “A great part of the pain caused by our mental illness lies in the isolation and rejection we face, on top of our difficulties deep inside”. The stigma, not only restricted to institutionalized patients, portrays them as weak, troublesome and responsible for bringing shame on their families.
Filmed at Al Madina Theatre in July 2013 during the only live performance before a wide audience, “From the Bottom of my Brain” constitutes a vehicle for the actors to reach greater emotional well-being and self-awareness. Most importantly, it is a tangible proof for the spectators that these individuals are capable of being productive.

Scheherazade in Baabda: a play performed by the women inmates of Baabda Prison

Scheherazade in Baabda: a play performed by the women inmates of Baabda Prison

Following the widely acclaimed play and award-winning documentary “12 Angry Lebanese” with male inmates from Lebanon’s high-security Roumieh prison, Zeina Daccache expands the drama therapy/theatre program to Baabda Women's Prison. From the women personal stories, the new play Scheherazade in Baabda emerges as a result of 10 months of work, highlighting both the difficult conditions in which women detainees live and the increased vulnerability as women living in a conservative and patriarchal society. While Scheherazade told tales of wonderful adventures in a beautiful fantasy world, the 20 Scheherazades who take the stage here have tales of a different kind: authentic life stories that invariably end up with the heroine behind bars. Their stories, told through monologues, short scenes, a vibrant flamenco and a traditional dance open the door on violence which has been suffered before being committed.
These “murderers of husbands”, “adulterers”, and “drug felons” lash out at the country’s patriarchal system and twisted view of women and their role telling stories of sexual abuse at a young age, denied childhood, forced marriage and domestic violence in a country that does not criminalize this type of abuse. Besides addressing women’s rights, the play is also peppered with instances of sheer fun as the women tackle the life in prison stories.
Filmed inside Baabda Prison in April 2012, at one of the 12 live performances given to the external audience, “Scheherazade in Baabda” stands as an exceptional play infused with the honest emotions of the actresses-storytellers and stark realism of their situation.

After 15 years of exile in France, Kamal returns to Beirut with his mind set on one goal: recreate the dance group he had formed with his school friends and whom he hasn't seen since--but today, not only does he want to bring back this disparate group together, but also take the bold move of introducing a Western flavor to the traditional Dabkeh music. When the dancers audition before the jury of the national Dabkeh festival, they are curtly rejected on the basis that they are causing prejudice to the "only cultural icon left". This prompts them to refurbish their old school bus and embark on a road trip across Lebanese towns to perform and introduce their pioneering dance to the public. As they struggle to win people over to their alternative spirit, each of the dancers also realizes that they have also embarked on a personal journey to reconnect with their childhood, their friendships lost and found, the pains of the war and of separation; a journey that will lead a group of friends to turn the page on a painful past.

As civil strife engulfed the country, the women in the village learn of this fact and try, by various means and to varying success, to keep their men in the dark, sabotaging the village radio, then destroying the village TV. Digipack with slipcase of 5 DVDs

de Georges Ghanem, Mouna Mounayar, Elie Khoury

At the onset of war, every Lebanese leader sought the help and support of a different regional power, whether to secure the survival of his own clan, to lead the race for power, or to push for the destruction of the current system. It took an outraged thirty-year old to put the focus on the 10,452 km2 and call for “Lebanon First”.

This 5-part series documents the truths and events revolving around Bachir Gemayel, the youngest and one of the most charismatic, controversial and short-lived leader s of a war-torn Lebanese Republic.

For the first time, more than 35 foreign and local wartime decision-makers, supporters and opponents share accounts and insights on his formative years, his career growth and the challenges he outmaneuvered in major wartime milestones until his assassination in 1982.

Through layers of politics and mindsets, Bachir deviated from the fast lane granted by his privileged family name, to a path of his own, one that would revolutionize politics in the country and set common principles for Christians as well as non-Christian nationalists.

Written by prominent regional political analyst and news anchor Georges Ghanem, directed by regional documentary expert Mouna Mounayer, and with original music produced by British historian and composer David Rohl, “Bachir: the Series” gives an unprecedented look into his journey, delving into 33 hours of interviews, 7000 pictures and local and international archival footage spanning more than three decades.

Israeli bombing during this episode razed 50 villages and left half a million civilians homeless, causing a flood of refugees into Beirut. Many of those who fled south Lebanon have not returned, choosing instead to live a scavenging existence in bombed-out buildings in the capital, where they’re out of range of the Israeli-occupied “security zone” in the south. Through Leila’s relationship with her family and the women and children of the surrounding villages, we get to know the hopes and dreams of the people who have remained in south Lebanon as they work to rebuild their homes and their lives.

Trying to exorcise feelings of shame and humiliation that have long accompanied the image of his father and the village occupied by Israelis during the war of 1967, Malas tries to restore his father's history and give him a more honorable death. But tracing the outline of a memory tortured by burning questions finds only bitter answers.

This film attempts to explore the anxiety that Palestinians are experiencing, especially those who have been uprooted from their land and have lived as exiles. This anxiety is about the site of burial, which lies at the heart of the legitimate longing for homecoming. The sense of death becomes the sense of belonging to a place. How can filming and montage express the duality of life and death, homeland and exile in the identity of the Palestinians? The film tells the stories of Palestinians in their relation with the Place to live and the Place to die. Shot in Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, France, the UK, Bulgaria, USA and Vietnam, it talks about well-known figures in culture and politics, like Yasir Arafat and Edward Saïd. It also talks about ordinary Palestinians who were subjected to massacres throughout the history of the Palestinian struggle, from 1948 until the present.

        de Carol Mansour

Thousands of Asian women leave their homes each year to work as maids in the Arab world, with the hope of securing a better economic future. Yet since their experiences are hidden behind closed doors, little is known of the fears and struggles they face while abroad. Tracing women’s journeys from Sri Lanka to Lebanon, this film exposes the little-known world of the domestic migrant worker. While some are able to succeed, many do not. Rather, their dreams are shattered in exploitive and abusive situations. In their own voices, the women in this film reveal cases of torture, rape, physical and mental abuse, and non-payment of wages. The documentary provides an insightful and sensitive look into the lives of these migrant workers with interviews from family members, employers, hiring agents and specialists in the field. It explores the questions of why women migrate, why they often return to the Middle East multiple times, and why abuses occur.

        Al Houdoud
        The Border

A traveler between two countries metaphorically named "Easternstan" and "Westernstan" loses his passport and identity papers. Stuck between the two countries he can neither cross the frontiers nor get back to where he came from. He's forced to camp in the neutral area between the two countries, facing a lot of funny situations while there. The movie satirizes the ideology of Arab unity and cooperation at the state level.
