      Description

Following the widely acclaimed play and award-winning documentary “12 Angry Lebanese” with male inmates from Lebanon’s high-security Roumieh prison, Zeina Daccache expands the drama therapy/theatre program to Baabda Women's Prison. From the women personal stories, the new play Scheherazade in Baabda emerges as a result of 10 months of work, highlighting both the difficult conditions in which women detainees live and the increased vulnerability as women living in a conservative and patriarchal society. While Scheherazade told tales of wonderful adventures in a beautiful fantasy world, the 20 Scheherazades who take the stage here have tales of a different kind: authentic life stories that invariably end up with the heroine behind bars. Their stories, told through monologues, short scenes, a vibrant flamenco and a traditional dance open the door on violence which has been suffered before being committed.
These “murderers of husbands”, “adulterers”, and “drug felons” lash out at the country’s patriarchal system and twisted view of women and their role telling stories of sexual abuse at a young age, denied childhood, forced marriage and domestic violence in a country that does not criminalize this type of abuse. Besides addressing women’s rights, the play is also peppered with instances of sheer fun as the women tackle the life in prison stories.
Filmed inside Baabda Prison in April 2012, at one of the 12 live performances given to the external audience, “Scheherazade in Baabda” stands as an exceptional play infused with the honest emotions of the actresses-storytellers and stark realism of their situation.
